In this blog post I share how to get the results of a salon manicure from the comfort of your home! Make sure you have plenty of time as well as patience.
If this is your first time here, welcome! And thank you for visiting my website. I’m Chezne, a South African Content Creator, Mom and Entrepreneur. Please check out my about page to get to know me better, and connect with me on my social media accounts.
Let’s Begin!
Before you begin with your salon style home manicure, you may want to set the mood just like they would in a professional salon – find a comfortable spot, light a couple of candles, burn your favourite fragrant incense and play soft relaxing music. Don’t Forget to Turn your phone on silent so as not to be disrupted during your pamper session.
Tools You Will Need To Do A Home Manicure
Products You Will Need:
- Warm Water
- Nail polish remover
- Cottonwool
- Nail polish, Base Coat, Top Coat
- Exfoliator
- Cuticle oil
- Cream Moisturiser
- Massage Oil
Home Manicure Technique:
Step One
The first step to the perfect home manicure is removing your old nail polish. Use a non-acetone nail polish remover as it is gentle on nails and skin.
Step Two
Cut your nails if necessary and file them until you achieve your desired shape. Most manicurists will tell you to only file in a certain direction to minimise splintering, however with Sh’Zen’s glass nail file you can file in both directions. It prevents splitting, and seals the edge of the nail beautifully to keep it strong and neat. The Sh’Zen glass nail file is available in a choice of three colours: orange, white and red.
After filing your nails, buff them. Avoid over buffing so as not to damage the nail bed. Also keep in mind that if the nail is too smooth the nail polish wont adhere as well.
Step Three
Exfoliate your hands to get rid of any hard, and dry skin: Soak your hands in a bowl of warm water for 2 minutes then scrub your hands gently using the product and rinse well.
Step Four
Push your cuticles back gently with a cuticle pusher and remove excess skin with a cuticle nipper. Be careful and gentle, so as not to damage the cuticle or hurt yourself in any way.
Step Five
- Use cotton wool and nail polish remover to get rid of any left over product and anything else that may interfere with the nail polish application.
- Paint your nail with the base coat and sweep a layer along the nail tip to prevent your nail polish from chipping then wait for it to dry
- Apply 1 coat of your desired nail polish colour, wait for it to dry and apply another coat. Sweep a layer of colour along the tip of the nail as you did with the base coat. 2 coats of nail polish is usually enough and the sweeping motion along the nail tip is important to ensure longevity of the nail polish.
- Apply a top coat once both coats of nail polish are completely dry.
- Sweep a layer of the top coat along the tip of the nail to prevent chipping.
Step Six
When your nails have completed drying, gently massage cuticle oil or cream into your cuticles and fingertips in a circular motion. Massage helps to increase blood circulation which has a number of health benefits, and the cuticle oil/ cream will help hydrate and replenish your skin. In the case of badly damaged nails, use daily. For the maintenance of healthy nail growth, use weekly.
Step Seven
The last step to your perfect home manicure is the Hand Massage. Use a refining balm, repair cream, replenishing cream, hand moisturiser or massage oil to do a relaxing hand massage. Use a fair amount of product and massage into the skin, applying light pressure in circular strokes using your thumbs, and fingers where necessary. Pay special attention to the knuckle joints, palms and wrists.
When I do a hand massage I enjoy massaging all the way up to my elbow for additional relaxation and healing.
Sh’Zen Ultra Rich Shea Butter Beauty Sleep For Hands
If you’re doing a Hand Massage before bed time I recommend using Sh’Zen’s Ultra Rich Shea Butter Beauty Sleep for hands. This rich overnight hand balm treats skin to a rich blend of reparative, anti-ageing actives. Shea Butter, Marula and Sesame oils nourish skin to keep it soft and supple. Patchouli, Sandalwood and Mandarin are deeply hydrating and healing, plus are known for their soothing, relaxing properties that promote sleep. You apply this beautiful balm generously just before retiring to bed amd awaken to smooth, rehydrated and younger looking skin.
Benefits of Hand Massage
Scientific evidence has shown that a regular hand massage may help ease pain, increase hand strength, and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. Hand massage can complement treatments for arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, neuropathy, and other conditions.
A professional hand massage is a good investment for your overall health. And a daily self-massage routine can provide you with ongoing benefits.
